Sophie Penkethman-Young’s Scroll Play
Sophie Penkethman-Young dives into the cursed, chaotic and charming depths of the online world to create inquisitive artworks exploring technology, the internet and capitalism with humour.
Clothes drying on an inside hanger, golden sunsets, a postman in mid-delivery, and an elderly couple embracing – these are some of the images emerging from peoples’ experience of self-isolation, which are being curated and share under the Instagram project Mass Isolation Australia (or #massisolationAUS).
Curated by the Ballarat International Foto Biennale, the Mass Isolation project asks viewers in Australia, and most pertinently, at least right now, in Melbourne, to share their photographs of self-isolation with the tags #massisolation and #massisolationAUS. From here, the specially created Mass Isolation Aus Instagram then shares a selection of these images – it’s a humble and poignant way to come together, via photography, during this moment.
Below, we’ve gathered a selection of images shared via the project, showing intimate moments of isolation. Find out how you can participate in the project.
