Founded by philanthropist, collector and gambler David Walsh (1961– ), the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) opened 21 January 2011. Currently Australia’s largest private museum, the collection includes ancient, modern and contemporary art. Designed by Melbourne-based architectural firm Fender Katsalidis, the subterranean museum connects two heritage houses at either end—the Courtyard House and the Round House, designed by Sir Roy Grounds in the late 1950s. In December 2017 an additional wing named Pharos extends outward over the Derwent River. The underground tunnel system is still expanding.
