Monash Gallery of Art has transformed into the Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh), the preeminent national photography museum, dedicated to championing Australian photography and its vital role in culture and society. Our new identity builds on the incredible legacy forged over 30 years and will create a renewed platform to engage, local, national and international audiences as we cultivate a community that is actively engaged with Australian photography and its stories, and empower and celebrate its artists.

As the custodian of one of the most culturally significant collections of Australian photography in the country, the new name supports our vision for a destination precinct; a place that celebrates our cultural heritage and champions Australian photography. As a major photography destination in Australia’s network of galleries and museums, MAPh will contribute to the creation of a rich cultural life for Australians and those who visit both in person and online.

John Nixon: A Poet of Prints

Known as a great avant-garde painter, the late John Nixon also created hundreds of prints—which, as those who knew Nixon can attest, exemplify his minimalism, experimentalism, and his interlacing of life and art. John Nixon—Four Decades, Five Hundred Prints is currently on display at Geelong Gallery.

Mike Parr on catharsis and confrontation

Since the 1960s Mike Parr has been defining performance art. Known for his performances of extremis, from hacking off a fake arm to burying himself underneath a Tasmanian road for three days. With a new, three-part exhibition at Anna Schwartz Gallery, Parr talks about catharsis, the institutionalisation of performance art, and the motivations behind what he does.
