Araluen Arts Centre, Mparntwe

The Araluen Arts Centre operates as the visual art and performance hub of Central Australia, presenting an annual program of exhibitions, performances, and film. Known as the keeping place of stories, Araluen holds within its spaces some of the most significant works of art in Central Australia and brings to the stage world class performances from around the nation (and at times the world).

The Araluen Art Collection includes original artworks by renowned watercolourist Albert Namatjira and his artistic response to the Central Australian landscape, displayed in rotation in the Galleries, which themselves are only minutes from the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges and the country that gave his work birth.

The Araluen Arts Centre is committed to inspiring and entertaining the Alice Springs community, visitors and tourists with the very best local, national and international artists.

Sue Kneebone and the tides that bind

Over the past two decades, Sue Kneebone’s practice has threaded together found materials and archival information to consider the impact of settler colonialism on the landscape of South Australia. Kneebone’s exhibition at Adelaide Central Gallery is a nod to her great-great-grandfather and the “trans-oceanic” legacies braided into his story.

Max Athans and the proxy breath

The central life-giving gesture of the breath is at the core of Max Athans’ first institutional solo exhibition. Their series of sculptures, collectively titled Breathform, take air into latex ‘lungs’ which create a whistle in the exhale, a deep breathy sound that echoes eerily through the galleries.

Over 70 fabulous garments of exquisite craftsmanship – some made of silk with gold and silver embroidery and dazzling designs – have been assembled within a context of over 150 paintings, posters, wood block prints, magazines and decorative arts. Although many of the items have never been previously exhibited in Australia, most are now in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, with many specifically acquired for this exhibition.
