Survival Memories
Lauren Matthews embraces the rich history and tenacity of textiles to create samplers, patchwork, quilts and banners, in a heartbreaking but empowering body of work. A window into Matthew’s childhood experiences as an incest victim-survivor, the artist examines how textiles can be a vehicle for remembering, memorialising and agitating, combining the softness of textiles with a feminist ferocity, to allow her to reconnect with the little girl and honour her survival. Lauren Matthews is supported by an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend and RTP Fee-Offset Scholarship through Federation University Australia.
