Disconnect

Writing in 2021, Dr Kent Wilson, then Senior Curator at La Trobe Art Institute writes ‘Hogan’s work is a cavalcade of container and compartment. Packages of data delivered in choice of colour, density of colour, relations of colour, order of colour. Packaged volumes of space in forms and in frames. Everything reads. Everything messages.’ Often starting with a single word as a concept, ideas are processed, refined and extrapolated through the lens of system thinking that forms the basis for Hogan’ reductive visual language.

Overlaying this system thinking Hogan weaves references taken from history, music, literature, politics, screen culture and the modern landscape to create works layered with a multitude of meaning. In these new works, Hogan considers the fractured nature of the contemporary world from an objective and subjective viewpoint.
