A Shifting Perspective
In A Shifting Perspective, artist Lesley Sykes draws inspiration from a beautiful, light-filled studio at their home in Mongarlowe. Cluttered with collected objects and opening out to an overgrown garden and back creek, this environment provides the subject matter for Sykes’s paintings – interiors, still-life and the wild garden spaces. The works showcase a sgraffito technique – scratching into, rather than drawing on, the surface. Colour is applied and then rubbed back to become almost translucent. Rather than presenting a photographic representation, the paintings evoke the idea of spaces and objects. Forms are distorted and planes tilted, objects intersect and overlap – shifting perspective.
