Woven and Tied: Women’s Work?
Art from the Margins (AFTM) is excited to present our second Inspired AIR exhibition Woven and Tied:Women’s Work? The exhibition showcases fibre and textile works of art that have been produced during a six-week mentoring program with artistin-residence (AIR) Therese Flynn-Clarke and Outsider Artists from AFTM Gallery and Studios. Using basketry skills and stitching techniques, the artists explore the stereotypes of what is considered ‘women’s work’ within the art world and the wider community. Through Flynn-Clarke sharing her knowledge of this underestimated art form, Woven and Tied demonstrates how both traditional and contemporary materials can be used to explore the extremities of sculptural textile art. The Woven and Tied mentoring program includes three public programs: a Random Weave workshop on 23 February; a collaboration with The Murri School, Acacia Ridge; and a ‘Make and Take workshop’ at the exhibition opening on 2 March 2019.
