Jo Scicluna

Where The Land Lies

When Melbourne-based artist Jo Scicluna was invited to respond to the Gippsland region she sought the advice of members of the Gunaikurnai community in order to broaden and enrich her cultural understanding of, and engagement with place. These conversations determined the artist’s ‘itinerary’ and inspired an array of photo-sculptural works that interpret some of the sites on the Bataluk Cultural Trail, and the sense of connection developed by the artist through and amidst the land.

The artist would like to respectfully Acknowledge the Traditional lands of the Brayakalung people of the Gunaikurnai nation, as the land upon which Gippsland is now situated, and pay respect to their Elders past and present.

Special thanks to Dr Doris Paton, Grattan Mullet of GLAWaC and Rob Hudson at the Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place and Cr Carolyn Crossley.
