Smoking Pipes: A History in Collecting
Museums and art galleries across the globe are recognised predominantly as collecting institutions, with artefacts, art, and ethnographic and historical material forming the physical fabric of these collections. How these objects are acquired and their stories prior to arriving at a collecting institution, however, is just as important as the object itself.
Through the conduit of smoking pipes, this exhibition aims to share the histories of these acquisitions from the 1970s onwards. Rather than an exhibit on a typology of pipes across the various collecting areas, however, these smoking pipes provide a typology in collecting over the past fifty years.
