The Gentle Project celebrates Ian Gentle, an unconventional artist with a singular connection to the bush. The Project is also a unique collaboration between a major regional gallery and a community-owned School of Arts, both on the Illawarra Coast of NSW.
Ian Gentle (1945-2009) was a sculptor and painter who worked with eucalyptus branches to create witty, elegant, linear works ranging in scale from the miniature to the vast. For a decade, Ian lived in what was then a rundown and neglected Clifton School of Arts building, which stands in the shadow of the Illawarra Escarpment just south of Sydney. He became a well-known local identity in the front bar of the Imperial pub, just across the road from his studio.
