The idea of a series of Sidney Nolan paintings hanging in a newsagent’s shop window seems rather quaint. Yet this was the scene that greeted customers of Sheffield’s newsagency in the Melbourne suburb of Heidelberg in July 1942. Now, 75 years later, Heide Museum of Modern Art is reimagining this overlooked exhibition to consider its place within Nolan’s career.
Showcasing the work of its founding members, the exhibition is packed with works from the 1980s up to the present day. The Boomalli Ten feels like a celebration not just of those 10 artists but more broadly of the Indigenous Australian art now flourishing in the post-colonial present.
For an artist who occupies herself with ideas surrounding training and submission, Lou Hubbard can’t quite rein in time.
Known for his massive drawings, Fairbairn has extended his raw, linear approach to portraiture into the realm of printmaking. His exhibition Drawn to Print couples existing drawings with these new printed works.
