Tina Haim – Tina Haim-Wentscher – Tina Wentcher: Sculptor 1887–1974
Tina Wentcher was born in 1887 in Constantinople and established herself as a significant portrait sculptor in Berlin. She travelled extensively throughout South East Asia, where she made a number of portraits of the local people. After fleeing conflicts in Europe and Asia, Wentcher arrived in Australia in 1940 and continued to produce work that united varied cultural and aesthetic influences. After several years of research, curator Ken Scarlett OAM has traced Wentcher’s sculptures in Germany, Greece, China, Singapore, North America and Australia, to be presented with McClelland’s representative collection of works by this somewhat overlooked figure in Australian sculpture.
