Even though Chinese-Australian artist Lindy Lee has changed and refined her art practice over time there are certain themes that continually pervade her work.
Like many exhibitions, Telaesthesia began with conversation. “The five artists in this exhibition all shared a studio space for several years until 2012 and we would sit around our kitchen table and talk about what it meant to be painting in a post-digital and post-internet world,” says curator and artist Tony Lloyd.
In After Voices, Kuswidananto used animatronics, sound, video and sculpture to create a ghostly protest procession that had a distinctly theatrical edge.
“The redback spider, she’s so fierce looking and so beautiful,” says Barton, who sees the surreal RED as a celebration of raw female power. “She’s really a weapon, so she speaks to me aesthetically.”
