The idea of a series of Sidney Nolan paintings hanging in a newsagent’s shop window seems rather quaint. Yet this was the scene that greeted customers of Sheffield’s newsagency in the Melbourne suburb of Heidelberg in July 1942. Now, 75 years later, Heide Museum of Modern Art is reimagining this overlooked exhibition to consider its place within Nolan’s career.
Showcasing the work of its founding members, the exhibition is packed with works from the 1980s up to the present day. The Boomalli Ten feels like a celebration not just of those 10 artists but more broadly of the Indigenous Australian art now flourishing in the post-colonial present.
Eight contemporary artists turn their attention to the joys and challenges of motherhood in Stockroom’s group show MUM.
Rather than focusing on the object of the photograph, Jafri takes on the subjectivity of a topic that, historically, has been deemed rather concrete: the days of national independence from colonial powers around the world.
