Making a Splash: Mermaids and Modernity
This exhibition explores the mermaid as an active agency and cultural figure of the contemporary world. This exhibition recasts the mermaid with fresh interpretations that encapsulates the socio-political and cultural dimensions that connect tradition and folklore with contemporary issues specific to time, place and site. The creation of new works for this exhibition have recontexualised the mermaid within a wide schema of identity and gender politics, the environment and heritage issues amid the currency of our times. Rethinking the mermaid as a powerful symbol that has the capacity to make change about contemporary issues lies at the core of Making a Splash. The exhibition features the creation of new works offering fresh interpretations of the mermaid including painting, photography, sound and installation. Artists: Effy Alexakis, Alan Barlow, Meredith Brice, Mauro Anselmo Olivos Castilo, Daniel Mudie Cunningham, Kate Downhill, Cassandra Hard, Jacqueline Drinkall, Nigel Helyer and Nola Leach Jones.
