The idea of a series of Sidney Nolan paintings hanging in a newsagent’s shop window seems rather quaint. Yet this was the scene that greeted customers of Sheffield’s newsagency in the Melbourne suburb of Heidelberg in July 1942. Now, 75 years later, Heide Museum of Modern Art is reimagining this overlooked exhibition to consider its place within Nolan’s career.
Showcasing the work of its founding members, the exhibition is packed with works from the 1980s up to the present day. The Boomalli Ten feels like a celebration not just of those 10 artists but more broadly of the Indigenous Australian art now flourishing in the post-colonial present.
This exhibition, drawn from the QUT Art Museum’s largely post-1960 collection, dallies with a contemporary impulse to minimise, downsize and the mantra of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle.’
Sydney-based artist Kuba Dorabialski has won the annual John Fries Award for early-career artists from Australia and New Zealand with his video work, Invocation Trilogy #1: Floor Dance of Lenin’s Resurrection 2017.
