Art school affords future creators the time and space to experiment, understand and refine their craft. Grounded: Contemporary Australian Art at the National Art School Gallery harks back to these formative years.
The most interesting quality of old things is that they even appeared new. I think that’s because they were never wholly, truly new: they were mostly just reheated bits of even older stuff but given a makeover, like a plain person getting a new hairdo or losing some weight.
Next week a group of artists will present a petition to the National Gallery of Victoria demanding that the gallery sever its ties with Wilson Security, a firm it accuses of “violently enforcing” the incarceration of refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru.
