Even though Chinese-Australian artist Lindy Lee has changed and refined her art practice over time there are certain themes that continually pervade her work.
Like many exhibitions, Telaesthesia began with conversation. “The five artists in this exhibition all shared a studio space for several years until 2012 and we would sit around our kitchen table and talk about what it meant to be painting in a post-digital and post-internet world,” says curator and artist Tony Lloyd.
Based on an idea by French philosopher Paul Virilio, EXIT draws on a quarter of a century’s worth of scientific data to vividly animate the world’s hot spots of deforestation, rising seas and mass migration as a result of global warming.
Art itself, I have realised, is a kind of magical thinking, a kind of reasoning defined as the “identification of causal relationships between actions and events where scientific consensus says that there are none”.
