A Portrait is a Puzzle

The artist’s portraiture questions the validity of first impressions and stereotypes. For the series ‘You look like a …’ (2016-17), the artist selected men who sported beards as a lifestyle choice, not as a religious, cultural or political comment. Cherine’s work attracted media attention after publishing the article ‘Terrorist or hipster — what does a beard mean?’, which explored the issues of facial grooming in the context of current global events. Morphing her own features with these 12 portraits in an animation brings issues of gender into the interpretation. In Shadowing portraits (2014–16) the artist hides behind Australian photographers and art critics. Cherine mimics her subjects as they posture for the camera while remaining anonymous.
