Gillian Lavery and Mike Barnard

A Necessary Stupidity

This exhibition is the first in a collaborative project between Gillian Lavery and Mike Barnard exploring notions of speculative labour. It takes its title from William Kentridge’s fourth lecture in the series On Drawing. For Kentridge, our world is populated by emergent forms and ideas that are perpetually ‘becoming’. Making sense of this world requires a certain stupidity: an open-ended ‘following of impulses … without a destination’.
